Barney Sadowski

July 25, 2008

Bernard A. "Barney" Sadowski  81, of Camillus and formerly of Solvay, passed away at home Friday surrounded by his loving family. Born at home on First Street in Solvay, he was the son of Ignatius and Teofila Sadowski. Following graduation from Solvay High School, Barney joined the Army in 1945 and served as a clerk in the Judge Advocate General's office in Berlin, Germany. He married Florence H. Owens in 1948 and eventually had four sons. After graduating from Cortland State College, Barney had a career in radio advertising sales that spanned nearly 50 years, including employment with WHEN, WNDR and WNTQ radio stations. He also taught at SUNY Oswego.

Barney loved his family, his camp on Sandy Pond, SU football, bowling and the game of golf, which was his great passion. He was a member of the Solvay-Geddes Kiwanis Club, Camillus Elks, Knights of Columbus and Boy Scouts of America, for which he received a Lifetime Scout Award. For several years Barney coached Westvale Optimist baseball teams. He previously volunteered as chairman of the Camillus Parks and Recreation Dept. and was instrumental in establishing Shove Park and Reed Webster Park. Barney was a caring "people person" with many friends and an unlimited reservoir of puns and jokes and will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Alexander, whom he greatly loved and respected. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, the former Florence Owens; devoted sons, Bernard D. (Deb) Sadowski of Clay, David J. (Lois) Sadowski of Syracuse, Mark K. (Dianna) Sadowski of Norwalk, CT, and Kevin P. (Gia) Sadowski of Syracuse; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Arrangements are by Buranich Funeral Home, Camillus. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
